Range Safety Officer Course to be offered in March.

Mission Critical Concepts, a firearms training company that focuses on training Military Law Enforcement professionals, will be offering a Range Safety Officer course to the public. With the increasing popularity of Wisconsin State High School Clay Target League, there is a need for more trained Range Safety Officers (RSO’s).

The classroom session will be held at the Crex Meadows Visitor Center, located on the North end of Grantsburg. A range walk through will be conducted in the afternoon at the Grantsburg Rod & Gun Club.

If interested, you can register for this class by email: trainer716@comcast.net

Cougar presence in Wisconsin carries into 2018

From the WDNR website:

Contact(s): Jane Wiedenhoeft, assistant large carnivore specialist, 715-762-1362

MADISON – Department of Natural Resource staff confirmed trail camera photos of a cougar in Fond du Lac County in early January in addition to confirmation of a cougar moving through Lincoln and Langlade counties in mid-December.

Image from WDNR website

The December photos were captured on one property northeast of Merrill on the same day with two separate trail cameras. Eight days later, two separate photos were captured on a property south of Antigo. Later in January, cougar photo was confirmed near Rosendale.

The properties near Antigo and Merrill are roughly 23 miles apart, and these photos present the possibility that this was the same cougar, moving in an easterly direction. It is unknown whether these photos show the same animal photographed on multiple trail cameras in central Wisconsin between early August and late October 2017, or of the cougar reported in Douglas County in mid-November.

Cougars can travel long distances in a short time period. Without biological material for genetic testing, department staff are unable to confirm whether this is one or multiple cougars. As a reminder, suspected cougar sightings can be reported by searching the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, for large mammal observation form.

There is currently no evidence that cougars are breeding in Wisconsin. Biologists believe the cougars known to have entered Wisconsin are male cougars dispersing from a breeding population in the western United States.

Cougars are a protected species in Wisconsin and hunting is not allowed. Cougars are not considered a threat to public safety, and in the unlikely event that a person is confronted by a cougar, face the animal and spread your arms and open your coat or jacket to appear larger. If a cougar approaches, make noise and throw rocks or sticks.

Confirmed cougar sighting trail camera photos and maps with confirmed sighting locations can be found on the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, by searching keyword “cougar.”

Winter Walleye Tips

By PBO Contributor Matt Ress

Well I’ve been on the prowl searching for Walleyes! And “Scored”!

Image may contain: 1 person

My key is using tip ups and sucker or shiner 1 foot off of the bottom. Next is to use a Rattle style jig to bring them in. Having a deadstick besides you will let the fish choose a less aggressive approach if the fast jigging action doesn’t entice them.

So far the bite has been mainly at dusk which is normal for walleyes. But, stay tuned there may be some daytime action coming in the future! The fish have been active in the weeds or right near the weed beds. Pay attention to green weeds which are the preferred habitat.

Candlelight Snowshoe Hike This Friday Night at Crex Meadows Wildlife Area

The Crex Meadows Wildlife Area will be hosting a candlelight snowshoe / walk along their 1.25 mile trail behind the Visitor Center, located on the north edge of Grantsburg.

Snowshoes will be available at a first come, first serve basis. Of course you can bring your own. Depending on how much snow is on the trail, you may even be able to walk it with a decent pair of boots. Luminaries will light the way, but a flashlight or headlamps is suggested.

After the hike you can warm up with hot chocolate and baked goods in the Visitor Center.

For more information, contact Crex Meadows at: (715) 463-2739
